Oppie Plaas is a family farm with fabulous food and activities, and is certainly far from ordinary. It is situated in Parys (Free State Province), which is perched on the banks of the Vaal River and in the exquisite Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site – famous for being the largest impact crater on earth.
The farm has been in this family for four generations, and offers locals and visitors the opportunity to relax and enjoy real South African hospitality. Situated in an old shed that was once used for sheep and tobacco, Oppie Plaas now offers breakfasts, lunches, irresistible sweet treats, a great cup of coffee and, a firm favourite, traditional ginger beer. The menu includes toasted sandwiches, Italianboer pasta, jaffles, chicken salad, and a range of goodies for little palates. In addition to freshly baked cakes, there are also chocolate brownies, koeksisters and milk tart; a real South African decadence.
Those who love gardening can visit the Oppie Plaas nursery, which is wheelchair-friendly and picturesque to peruse. The plants are healthy and available at good prices.
Children are not exempt from the Oppie Plaas charm either. There is a play area with a jungle gym, swings and a sandpit, which is just irresistible to those with energy to burn and an imagination to boot. Oppie Plaas can also be booked for kiddies’ parties and school outings. Book well in advance to avoid disappointment. The animal farm here is always a hit, as children can pet and feed our furry and feathered residents.
There are hiking trails on the farm itself, which introduce visitors to the natural beauty of the North West Province of South Africa. The views are gorgeous, and the geology fascinating. Bird watchers are reminded to bring their binoculars and identification books along to appreciate the avian variety too.
The arts and crafts market is another favourite Oppie Plaas feature, and is a fantastic place to buy gifts and keepsakes.
